Warmth and Comfort for Christmas with the Fourteenth Quilt

Welcome my friend, Robyn Echols to my blog as she announces her newest book, The Fourteenth Quilt.

Annie, Ce14Quiltlia and Lynn are all that are left of the Relief Society quilting class, but they are still determined to make baby quilts for the new mothers at church. Annie, who is just south of eighty years old, calls the quiltsters (short for quilting sisters) together to ask for more. She wants to make lap quilts to give to some of the “forgotten” oldsters she sings to each week at the nursing home—something to wrap them in love at Christmastime. It’s a good idea, but the trio discovers that life and making quilts don’t always go as planned.

The quiltsters discuss recipes and quilting ideas including a crocheted cat mat to use up their fabric selvage and trim scraps, all of which they share in the book.

Sarah and Brian meet at the university. Their first date is after Sarah’s First Saturday Block of the Month class she attends with her mom at the local quilt shop. Their romance grows, and they plan their future together—a plan that will require them to be separated for six months before their wedding. But, can they bear to be apart that long?

What wraps together this Christmas tale? The Fourteenth Quilt.

Excerpt #3:      (Learning Curve)

Lynn had no sooner reached the middle of the next row than she ran out of bobbin thread. With a sigh, she lifted the unquilted fabric and stuck her head underneath as if she were an old-timey photographer focusing her shot. She opened the bobbin compartment and removed the spent bobbin.

This is ridiculous! I can’t see a thing under here.

Lynn unfastened the side tension clips and threw the fabric up over the top of the sewing machine while she exchanged the empty bobbin for a full one. As she refastened the fabric in place, she decided next time she would clip the top thread and slide the machine to the end of the quilt. Surely it would be easier to deal with threading needles and changing bobbins in the full light and without also fighting the fabric.

Once Lynn replaced the bobbin and rotated the needle to catch the bobbin thread, she slid the foot pedal over several inches, grabbed the handles to the sewing machine tray, grit her teeth and started stitching.

“I am going to learn how to do this right,” Lynn said. In an increasingly louder voice, she continued, “because I want my quilts to turn out looking nice and I don’t want to have to quilt on a tabletop where I have to fight pushing the fabric through the machine. And I paid a lot of money for this sewing machine and quilt frame and it is my present for my next birthday, anniversary and Christmas and I AM GOING TO LOVE IT!”

0014QuilterBut, I’m not there yet.

The door swung open and slammed against the doorstop with a thud. Startled, Lynn lifted her foot to stop the machine and stared at her husband.

“Did you need anything?” asked Del. “It sounded like you were arguing with someone.”

“Uh, no. We’re doing just fine in here. But thank you for checking.”

Del shook his head as he pulled the door closed.

Lynn looked down at the frame and froze at the sight of the gold and white long-hair cat stretched out across the section of quilt secured between the two upper poles.

“No you don’t, Archie, this is not your personal kitty hammock,” Lynn scooped up the cat in frustration. She carried Archie to the door and gently tossed him down the hallway as she called out to her husband. “Del, I don’t mind if you come in my sewing room, but please be sure you don’t let Archie in. I don’t want kitty fur all over my projects.”

With a huff, Lynn once again approached the quilt frame.

“I mean it,” Lynn leaned over and whispered with a determined voice to the sewing machine. “Just as soon as I brush some of this cat fur off this quilt, you and I are going to learn to work together. We are going to become real good friends. So you just get that in your motor casing.”

SNIPPET #1

A granola bar gulped down while half-running, half-walking gave her instant heartburn. The ache in her throat intensified when the first person she encountered as she stepped into the tank area was Carter. He wore a black suit again with a red tie, perfectly pressed and contrasting against his mahogany brown hair tinged with a few gray streaks by the ears. He scowled at her and looked at his watch. Her breath disappeared. Why did he have to be so handsome? No way would she be duped by an attractive older guy again, like before, and get thoroughly burned.

“Two minutes late.”

“I’m sorry. I’ll make up for it by working a bit extra.”

A sheen of perspiration beaded his upper lip, and she could swear his hair looked a bit wet that morning. Had he also rushed out the shower? So why couldn’t he understand her being a few minutes late?

“You’re not to work overtime. Ever.” He narrowed his eyes at her. “You understand that?”

“Oh. Why ever not?” Grrh? Why do I always speak my mind without thinking?

“Because I lock up at five o’ clock on the dot every evening. Without fail.”

“Sure. Whatever.” She rolled her eyes at him and huffed.

He moved his face right up to her, a sneer mixed with a smile making his sexy mouth turn narrow. His hand brushed hers, whether on purpose she couldn’t be sure. “Are you back-chatting me, Tara?”

SNIPPET #2

A desperate need to kiss him forced any words she might speak in her defense to flee.

“Behave yourself, kid. You’re at least ten years younger than me.” He laughed and then pulled back in a hurry.

“I’m sure I’m not. I look a lot younger than I really am.” Did she say that?

“Oh really? The tropical fish need feeding. You should know the drill by now.”

She could swear Carter tried to look angry but he didn’t succeed. He marched off with such purpose making her wonder why a man like him didn’t own the whole of South Africa, not just a small aquarium in Umhlanga Rocks.

SNIPPET #3

Carter stood on the balcony of his home, a gentle breeze blowing his long bangs against his forehead. He watched her, the shock taking a while to wear off. How come he hadn’t noticed her swimming so close to his home before? That curly mop on her head formed a silhouette against the moonlight and the small sliver of sunlight rising up above the sea.

She’d danced down to the ocean like a fawn in the field—gentle, sweet, free. And then she’d stood there, a lone figure stirring a hunger in him so ferocious, it took his breath away. He wanted her. Like no other woman he’d ever known.

In fact, he’d never been much into women. Been too consumed by his own demons. But now he understood the world’s frantic obsession with romance and love. Love songs abounded, romance movies, friends in relationships and getting married, family members making subtle hints it was time for him to settle down—it all made sense to him now.

SNIPPET #4

A tingle ran up his spine, and cold showers prickled the top of his head. He held his temples in his hands, groaning and swaying with the breeze, surprised he didn’t fall down the two stories to the paving stones below.

The tingling in his back became an ache. His breath became labored.

“No, not now. I’m not ready.”

Usually they came in the dead of night. Never at breaking dawn.

But things had accelerated lately. He should have been prepared.

Somehow, the fun he’d had teaching Tara how to feed the sharks yesterday afternoon had distracted him, made him forget to stay alert. Guarded. He’d momentarily stopped dreading, had ignored the swirling in his gut, the tension eating away at his every step.

Interview with Tara the main character in Shark Boss

  1. What is your favorite food?
A good breakfast with eggs, bacons, mushrooms, toast, the works. I don’t get it often as I spend most mornings body-boarding and then grab and go to get to work on time. If I have a good breakfast, it’s a real treat.
  2. What is your favorite past time, or hobby?
Body-boarding, although it’s more my life than just a hobby.
  3. What is your favorite book?
I love the Chalet Girls series by Lorraine Wilson. I’m a beach babe, but it’s such fun learning about women who live in the snow and ski. Skiing is similar to body-boarding in a strange way, if you know what I mean. Plus, the books are so romantic and fun to read.
  4. Who would you consider is your least favorite person, and why?
It should be my new boss, Carter Jones, as he keeps on shouting at me for nothing, but it isn’t. He’s too handsome and mysterious to hate.
  5. What is your biggest pet-peeve?
Perfectionism – harping on the smaller issues. And cruelty to animals.
  6. What is your dream vacation?
Mauritius or anywhere where the waves are good.
  7. Did you struggle to tell your author anything?
Yes, I struggled to mention my affair with my high school teacher. I felt really ashamed for falling for that jerk.
  8. What is your favorite part of your story?
When Carter tells me the truth.
  9. What inspired the title of your story?
My writer kept on thinking of shark bait. But Carter is a boss and he was a shark in the business world, plus, well, I can’t tell you anymore as it will give away the story.
  10. Do you think that there is a specific message to your story, that you’d like your readers to learn?
That love wins in the end. That meeting and loving the right person can set you free of some of your “curses.” That simply loving a person is one of the greatest gifts you can give to the world. That love surpasses duty.
