SNIPPET #1

A granola bar gulped down while half-running, half-walking gave her instant heartburn. The ache in her throat intensified when the first person she encountered as she stepped into the tank area was Carter. He wore a black suit again with a red tie, perfectly pressed and contrasting against his mahogany brown hair tinged with a few gray streaks by the ears. He scowled at her and looked at his watch. Her breath disappeared. Why did he have to be so handsome? No way would she be duped by an attractive older guy again, like before, and get thoroughly burned.

“Two minutes late.”

“I’m sorry. I’ll make up for it by working a bit extra.”

A sheen of perspiration beaded his upper lip, and she could swear his hair looked a bit wet that morning. Had he also rushed out the shower? So why couldn’t he understand her being a few minutes late?

“You’re not to work overtime. Ever.” He narrowed his eyes at her. “You understand that?”

“Oh. Why ever not?” Grrh? Why do I always speak my mind without thinking?

“Because I lock up at five o’ clock on the dot every evening. Without fail.”

“Sure. Whatever.” She rolled her eyes at him and huffed.

He moved his face right up to her, a sneer mixed with a smile making his sexy mouth turn narrow. His hand brushed hers, whether on purpose she couldn’t be sure. “Are you back-chatting me, Tara?”

SNIPPET #2

A desperate need to kiss him forced any words she might speak in her defense to flee.

“Behave yourself, kid. You’re at least ten years younger than me.” He laughed and then pulled back in a hurry.

“I’m sure I’m not. I look a lot younger than I really am.” Did she say that?

“Oh really? The tropical fish need feeding. You should know the drill by now.”

She could swear Carter tried to look angry but he didn’t succeed. He marched off with such purpose making her wonder why a man like him didn’t own the whole of South Africa, not just a small aquarium in Umhlanga Rocks.

SNIPPET #3

Carter stood on the balcony of his home, a gentle breeze blowing his long bangs against his forehead. He watched her, the shock taking a while to wear off. How come he hadn’t noticed her swimming so close to his home before? That curly mop on her head formed a silhouette against the moonlight and the small sliver of sunlight rising up above the sea.

She’d danced down to the ocean like a fawn in the field—gentle, sweet, free. And then she’d stood there, a lone figure stirring a hunger in him so ferocious, it took his breath away. He wanted her. Like no other woman he’d ever known.

In fact, he’d never been much into women. Been too consumed by his own demons. But now he understood the world’s frantic obsession with romance and love. Love songs abounded, romance movies, friends in relationships and getting married, family members making subtle hints it was time for him to settle down—it all made sense to him now.

SNIPPET #4

A tingle ran up his spine, and cold showers prickled the top of his head. He held his temples in his hands, groaning and swaying with the breeze, surprised he didn’t fall down the two stories to the paving stones below.

The tingling in his back became an ache. His breath became labored.

“No, not now. I’m not ready.”

Usually they came in the dead of night. Never at breaking dawn.

But things had accelerated lately. He should have been prepared.

Somehow, the fun he’d had teaching Tara how to feed the sharks yesterday afternoon had distracted him, made him forget to stay alert. Guarded. He’d momentarily stopped dreading, had ignored the swirling in his gut, the tension eating away at his every step.

Interview with Tara the main character in Shark Boss

  1. What is your favorite food?
A good breakfast with eggs, bacons, mushrooms, toast, the works. I don’t get it often as I spend most mornings body-boarding and then grab and go to get to work on time. If I have a good breakfast, it’s a real treat.
  2. What is your favorite past time, or hobby?
Body-boarding, although it’s more my life than just a hobby.
  3. What is your favorite book?
I love the Chalet Girls series by Lorraine Wilson. I’m a beach babe, but it’s such fun learning about women who live in the snow and ski. Skiing is similar to body-boarding in a strange way, if you know what I mean. Plus, the books are so romantic and fun to read.
  4. Who would you consider is your least favorite person, and why?
It should be my new boss, Carter Jones, as he keeps on shouting at me for nothing, but it isn’t. He’s too handsome and mysterious to hate.
  5. What is your biggest pet-peeve?
Perfectionism – harping on the smaller issues. And cruelty to animals.
  6. What is your dream vacation?
Mauritius or anywhere where the waves are good.
  7. Did you struggle to tell your author anything?
Yes, I struggled to mention my affair with my high school teacher. I felt really ashamed for falling for that jerk.
  8. What is your favorite part of your story?
When Carter tells me the truth.
  9. What inspired the title of your story?
My writer kept on thinking of shark bait. But Carter is a boss and he was a shark in the business world, plus, well, I can’t tell you anymore as it will give away the story.
  10. Do you think that there is a specific message to your story, that you’d like your readers to learn?
That love wins in the end. That meeting and loving the right person can set you free of some of your “curses.” That simply loving a person is one of the greatest gifts you can give to the world. That love surpasses duty.

SNIPPET #1

“They revoked our mer-privileges without even asking us? I never knew there was a law. Why didn’t someone tell me there was a choice needing to be made? How can they do that?” Sandy went from scared to ticked-off in less than the flick of a crab’s tongue.

SNIPPET #2

Sandy rolled her eyes. He talked tough and proud, but she could still see the self-doubt under the surface. He was still the same old dork, and still pining for Shelly who never gave a flip for him. “Aren’t you going to get in trouble for talking to me?” she asked, remembering why she was hiding in her grandparents’ house again.

“I’m a Ritno. I dare them.” He puffed out his chest, making the dark green band stretch to it’s max, though he did quickly look off to the side to check that no one was around. “By the way. What are you doing here?”

SNIPPET #3

“You know, I could sneak you out of here.” He whispered, his face close to her’s as he whispered even softer.

Goosebumps erupted down her arms. Sandy shook her head so she could focus on what he was saying. “My dad would be blamed, and your parents…”

SNIPPET #4

“Thanks, Pops.” Sandy smiled a little, wiping her pearly tears away; knowing if they were allowed to stay on the cushions Grandma would be after her for the stains.

Dad sighed, looking up at Grandpa. “I don’t know what to do, Dad.” He let his head fall back against the door frame. “I’ve two amazing daughters. One who is so headstrong she made it back into the lake after two years of my putting her off, and made a huge mess, and yet still her biggest regret is thinking she can’t reach her full potential to help this world which is ruining her life.”

“I know, son.” Grandfather nodded, his lips pinched together. “What do you think we should do, Mother?” Grandpa waved Grandmother in to come sit beside him. The bedroom was kind of small to start with, and it was getting cozier by the second.

Main character casting for Drowning Sandy:

Sarah2 Sandy Antori: Spunky, and yet quick to want to please others, she finds herself battling her inner wants and desires with the difficult decisions being an adult requires of her. Picking an actress to play Sandy is tough. When I wrote this book, I actually envisioned her looking like a friend of my sister. The next best second would have to be Shailene Woodley. Since, Shelly is Sandy’s twin, Shailene would have her work cut out for her not only being a mermaid, but being a twin too!Sarah1

Alardo Ritno: Not one to be pushed around either, poor Alardo has been nursing his secret crush for Sandy from when they were kids just learning to swim. Little does he know that Sandy had jumped to the conclusion he was completely hung up on her twin, Shelly. Jensen Ackles is PERFECT!!! Just needs the short cropped hair, and copper and gold scales … YUM!

Interview with Sandy and Alardo the main characters in Drowning Sandy

1. What is your favorite food?

Sandy: My mother’s lasagna, ooey-gooey and fresh from the oven. (Excuse me while I wipe off this drool.)
Alardo: I’ve got a hard-core sweet tooth. Chocolate, carmel, anything sweet really. Not suppose to eat sweets with the strict diet the guard is on, but what they don’t know won’t hurt them.

2. Do prefer to plan things, or be spontaneous?

Sandy: I’m a planner. I plan everything, and have lists of the lists that need to be made. I do not take change well at ALL.
Alardo: I like to think I’m the perfect mix of both. Not to be cocky, but I can be spontaneous when I need to be, and yet I don’t mind taking my time and planning things out when it comes to getting things right.

3. What one thing do you wish you could tell your past self?

Sandy: That’s a tough question. Maybe I’d tell myself to just breathe, but I don’t think I’d tell myself to do anything differently, because I’m pretty happy with the way things have ended up. It’s not perfect, but I feel like I’m where I was meant to be.
Alardo: O-o-oh that’s a tough one. I think I’d have to tell myself, to not hang with Shelly quite as much as I had. Who would have known  Sandy would take it so absolutely wrong. Ugh.

4. Did you struggle to tell your author anything?

Sandy: Actually in the beginning she wanted me to share this book with my twin. It took her like two drafts before she got the fact that this was MY book. I love my twin, but this … this was about my moment. Shelly’s will come, and I can’t wait for you to read it!
Alardo: Nah, Sands was plenty of vocal for me. I knew Shelly wasn’t meant to be a lead roll in this book. I just sat back and waited, because my side of the story was told pretty straight on.

5. What is your favorite part of your story?

Sandy: Honestly, this whole story is such a huge changing point in my life, it’s hard to pick just one moment. Maybe the first time Alardo kissed me. Wow, uh, did it get a little warm in here?
Alardo: That’s easy. My favorite moment was when I found out Sandy would be staying for good. If I’d been human, I would have collapsed and landed right on my well shaped behind. Mermen do not collapse though, so my parents will probably never know that for once in my life their ultra controlling, backwards thinking way of life actually did something right.

6. What inspired the title of your story?

Sandy: I should think that would be sort of obvious. Ha-ha-ha!
Alardo: Well, Sandy went through quite a bit in the story. I think it’s a fitting title since she drowned both emotionally and mentally and then she drowned again quite literally. It was horrible, but like I said, it’s kind of perfect.

7. Do you think that there is a specific message to your story, that you’d like your readers to learn?

Sandy: Definitely! I think my story is all about choices, and how vital they can be to your life. The tiniest of choices can start a ripple effect, so to speak, that can turn into a tidal wave of change in your life.
Alardo: and along with what Sands just said, I think it’s important to remember to go with the flow. (And that pun is totally intended, by the way.)

8. What is the origin of your name? Does it have a neat story?

Sandy: Funny story, my name may or may not have come from one of the author’s cousins. But it was a totally inspirational situation. I don’t have a whole lot in common with her.
Alardo: My name is an older Greek name, meaning courageous prince. Originally this story was going to be titled, Sandy’s prince. Lame right? He-he-he

Carol Malone
Award-winning author Carol Malone has successfully combined her three passions – romance, sports, and writing in her two highly-rated books, Fight Card Romance: Ladies Night, and Ladies Night Christmas sequel. She was the first woman to write a romance for the all-male dominated genre. Carol invites her readers to scramble into a front row seat for a thrill-ride of suspense, sports, and romance. If not hammering out new tales, Carol’s loves reading, sports, and hanging with her author husband on the coast of California.
Kathy Bosman

Kathy loves reading and writing even more. She homeschools her three kids, so in between unsuccessfully explaining the difference between subject and predicate or how to divide fractions, she enters an imaginary world of troubled and passionate characters whose stories take over the page. Kathy lives in Kwazulu Natal, South Africa, where the summers are hot, the winters cool, and bugs thrive. Her first published novel, Wedding Gown Girl, came out in 2012 with Astraea Press. She belongs to the Romance Writers of South Africa Group (ROSA) which has been her greatest support and inspiration the last few years.
Robyn Echols

Robyn Echols has been writing since she was in junior high school. By choice, she spent most of her evening hours in her "dungeon", as her mother called her downstairs bedroom, writing stories, only joining her family in front of the television upstairs when her favorite programs were playing. She has spent hours learning and teaching family history topics, and focuses on history from a genealogist's perspective of seeking out the details of everyday life in the past. Several of her family history articles have been published in genealogy magazines.
Now Robyn resides with her husband in California near the “Gateway to Yosemite” and has fun researching and writing the books that she hopes will interest and entertain her readers. She writes Young Adult/New Adult and contemporary fiction under Robyn Echols and adult historical romance under her pen name, Zina Abbott.
When Robyn isn’t busy piecing together novel plots, she stays busy piecing together quilt blocks.
