Book Synopsis:

Every Summer Has a Love Story…Six Summer Tales of Sweet Romance that bring you the very best in Historical, Contemporary and Fantasy Romance. Sarah Daley, Carol Malone, Kathy Bosman, Debby Lee, Robyn Echols, and Lisa Watson weave stories of long days, sultry nights, sun-kissed beaches and sweet romance

Dreaming in California by Debby Lee:

In the summer of 1967, Hollywood actress, Lucinda Baker, appears to have it all– fame, money, and an all too doting fiancé. Dark traits begin to emerge from the man she’s pledged to marry, and he threatens her. Lucinda must now lean on her best friend, celebrity photographer, George Creston to escape the clutches of the dangerous relationship. Together they are forced to summon courage, and trust each other in desperate circumstances. Will they find love in the process or lose everything they hold dear, including their lives.

A Summer of Stars by Lisa Watson:

McKinley Graham has escaped to her summer getaway to regain her perspective and her health. Zane Davidson has taken refuge in the lovely seaside community, welcoming the healing balm of the salty sea air and his childhood home to mend his wounds. They aren’t looking for love, but their attraction is too explosive to ignore.  Against the backdrop of starry nights and sultry kisses, they come to realize that even love may not be enough to save them from the angry storm of his past that threatens to destroy their dreams!

Drowning Sandy by Sarah Daley:

The water is calling…
and Sandy can no longer resist the urge to unleash her mermaid form. But a simple swim in Lake Ontario ends when she discovers the truth of her own banishment. When long time crush, Alardo, seems to shift in a direction she never dreamed possible, Sandy must make a choice — mermaid or human? Once she chooses, she can never go back.

Summer Holiday by Carol Malone:

In the summer of 1905, Lizzy Gordon’s father dismisses her desire to be a doctor, demanding she become a teacher—a profession which does not allow women to marry. Determined to be free to choose her destiny, Lizzy defies her father and falls for her grandma’s handsome neighbor—literally.Teacher Brent Pierce is dedicated to expanding young minds, but circumstances are forcing him to take over the family farm. Sweet complications arise when feisty Lizzy Golden drops into his arms. Before the summer is over Lizzy and Brent will be forced to make tough decisions. Can they find the courage to each fight for their independence, pursue their dreams, and still be together?

Shark Boss by Kathy Bosman:

When Tara takes up a job at the local aquarium, her colleagues warn her about their harsh boss, Mr. Carter Jones. She soon discovers how impatient he can be, but she also can’t deny her fascination and attraction to him. Carter can’t stop watching Tara as she works but holds back from her because of his secrets. If she knew what he was, she would never want him. Could the reason for Carter’s moods be related to something more troubling than what’s on the surface? Tara soon discovers Carter’s secret, and it only bonds them closer. But the curse starts to take over Carter’s life, and he won’t give his heart to a beautiful woman when he can only cause her pain.

The Best Place to Meet a Man by Robyn Echols:

Jeff goes to the beach to run and clear his head. Meredith goes to the beach intent on burying her nose in her book. In this contemporary romantic comedy, these two collide when Meredith’s two young nephews come up with other plans.

SweetKathy

Author, Kathy Bosman

Kathy loves reading and writing even more. She belongs to the Romance Writers of South Africa Group (ROSA) which has been her greatest support and inspiration the last few years.

Robyn Echols

Robyn Echols has been writing since she was in junior high school. She has spent hours learning and teaching family history topics, and focuses on history from a genealogist’s perspective of seeking out the details of everyday life in the past. Several of her family history articles have been published in genealogy magazines.

Now Robyn resides with her husband in California near the “Gateway to Yosemite” and has fun researching and writing the books that she hopes will interest and entertain her readers. She writes Young Adult/New Adult and contemporary fiction under Robyn Echols and adult historical romance under her pen name, Zina Abbott.

When Robyn isn’t busy piecing together novel plots, she stays busy piecing together quilt blocks.

SNIPPET #1

I can’t begin to tell you how tired I get of people trying to tell me where I should go to meet a man. Oh, I know they mean well. But for crying out loud, if I really wanted to meet men with the hope and expectation one would fall down at my feet and beg me to go out on a date with him, don’t you think I would have figured it out by now? I already know where to look for the kind of man in which I would be interested.

And, yes, I’m well aware the beach is not the place.

SNIPPET #2

Which explains why I got into a snit and decided to go to the beach anyway. I mean, why should I have to give up doing what I want to do on my Saturday—again? Why should I be stuck in the house—again? Nope, I’d head for the beach.

I’d just take the boys to the beach with me. I had it all planned out. I would take my biggest blanket, find a spot where there weren’t as many people, in sight of the water but not too close, and get the boys settled under the shade of the umbrella. I’d slather them with sunscreen and let them play until lunchtime. Then I’d feed them, and allow them to fall asleep for their afternoon naps while listening to the soothing sounds of water lapping against the shore. After all, if I played with Xander in the morning before I left, took plenty of snacks and toys for Xander and enough bottles and some applesauce for Calend, plus plenty of diapers and pull-ups for the two, they should be fine, right? Once they zonked out under the shade of the umbrella with a lightweight blanket over them if the breeze off the water should kick up, they should sleep for hours, right? I’d have lots of time full of peace and quiet to read. I should be able to get well into my story before they woke up and it was time to go home.

What could go wrong?

Interview with Meredith the main character in The Best Place to Meet a Man

  1. What is your favorite past time, or hobby?

Oh, I love to read. I mean, you have no idea how much I looked forward to going to the beach and burying my nose into my latest romantic suspense novel.

  1. What is your favorite book?

You honestly expect me to narrow it down to one book? Really? How can people do that? I would be hard-pressed to narrow it down to ten favorites. Or maybe twenty. I do like romances, however. And mysteries. And suspense novels. And combinations of the above.

  1. Do you prefer to plan things, or be spontaneous?

Oh, I definitely prefer to plan things. After all, I am a fourth-grade schoolteacher. If I didn’t put together my lesson plans well ahead of time, I can’t begin to imagine what kind of pandemonium would erupt in my classroom. Then again, at home living in the same house with my sister Marion and her two year-old Xander and her new baby—well, fairly new, he’s four months old, now—who can plan? Especially when Marion’s regular sitter asks to take off for a month of vacation, and guess what?  Just because I’m off work for the summer, and, without even telling me until after it is a done deal, my dear darling sister commits me to babysit her boys through the week while this lady’s gone.

  1. Who would you consider is your least favorite person, and why?

Oh, I don’t have any least favorite persons. Well sometimes my principle at the school gets on my nerves. And my brother-in-law Eddie can run a close second. I mean, Eddie is the boys’ father, but sometimes he conveniently likes to ignore that fact.

  1. What one thing do you wish you could tell your past self?

You know, it’s great that Mom and Dad willed their house in Seaside to my sister and me. But, as much as I love Marion and her family, I think I would tell my past self to think really hard about agreeing to share the house with my younger sister. I mean, just because she is a mother doesn’t make her my mother.

  1. What is your biggest pet-peeve?

That little Xander. I mean, I’m not even his mommy. I’m just his Auntie Meredith. But, do you think that stops him from pounding on my bedroom door anytime he thinks I might want to be alone and enjoy some peace and quiet? No. If he can’t rouse Marion when she locks herself in the hall bath for a few minutes of privacy, he comes and tries my door.

  1. Do you think that there is a specific message to your story, that you’d like your readers to learn?

Well, you know, from the time we were young, Marion and I were taught to be very careful about meeting strangers at public places. You know, like the beach? I mean, with everything that happens these days, a person can never be so careful. That’s why Jeff went to the beach to run and I went to read—both of us carefully minding our own business. But, guess what can happen to caution when you add an adventurous two year-old into the mix?

SNIPPET #1

A granola bar gulped down while half-running, half-walking gave her instant heartburn. The ache in her throat intensified when the first person she encountered as she stepped into the tank area was Carter. He wore a black suit again with a red tie, perfectly pressed and contrasting against his mahogany brown hair tinged with a few gray streaks by the ears. He scowled at her and looked at his watch. Her breath disappeared. Why did he have to be so handsome? No way would she be duped by an attractive older guy again, like before, and get thoroughly burned.

“Two minutes late.”

“I’m sorry. I’ll make up for it by working a bit extra.”

A sheen of perspiration beaded his upper lip, and she could swear his hair looked a bit wet that morning. Had he also rushed out the shower? So why couldn’t he understand her being a few minutes late?

“You’re not to work overtime. Ever.” He narrowed his eyes at her. “You understand that?”

“Oh. Why ever not?” Grrh? Why do I always speak my mind without thinking?

“Because I lock up at five o’ clock on the dot every evening. Without fail.”

“Sure. Whatever.” She rolled her eyes at him and huffed.

He moved his face right up to her, a sneer mixed with a smile making his sexy mouth turn narrow. His hand brushed hers, whether on purpose she couldn’t be sure. “Are you back-chatting me, Tara?”

SNIPPET #2

A desperate need to kiss him forced any words she might speak in her defense to flee.

“Behave yourself, kid. You’re at least ten years younger than me.” He laughed and then pulled back in a hurry.

“I’m sure I’m not. I look a lot younger than I really am.” Did she say that?

“Oh really? The tropical fish need feeding. You should know the drill by now.”

She could swear Carter tried to look angry but he didn’t succeed. He marched off with such purpose making her wonder why a man like him didn’t own the whole of South Africa, not just a small aquarium in Umhlanga Rocks.

SNIPPET #3

Carter stood on the balcony of his home, a gentle breeze blowing his long bangs against his forehead. He watched her, the shock taking a while to wear off. How come he hadn’t noticed her swimming so close to his home before? That curly mop on her head formed a silhouette against the moonlight and the small sliver of sunlight rising up above the sea.

She’d danced down to the ocean like a fawn in the field—gentle, sweet, free. And then she’d stood there, a lone figure stirring a hunger in him so ferocious, it took his breath away. He wanted her. Like no other woman he’d ever known.

In fact, he’d never been much into women. Been too consumed by his own demons. But now he understood the world’s frantic obsession with romance and love. Love songs abounded, romance movies, friends in relationships and getting married, family members making subtle hints it was time for him to settle down—it all made sense to him now.

SNIPPET #4

A tingle ran up his spine, and cold showers prickled the top of his head. He held his temples in his hands, groaning and swaying with the breeze, surprised he didn’t fall down the two stories to the paving stones below.

The tingling in his back became an ache. His breath became labored.

“No, not now. I’m not ready.”

Usually they came in the dead of night. Never at breaking dawn.

But things had accelerated lately. He should have been prepared.

Somehow, the fun he’d had teaching Tara how to feed the sharks yesterday afternoon had distracted him, made him forget to stay alert. Guarded. He’d momentarily stopped dreading, had ignored the swirling in his gut, the tension eating away at his every step.

Interview with Tara the main character in Shark Boss

  1. What is your favorite food?
A good breakfast with eggs, bacons, mushrooms, toast, the works. I don’t get it often as I spend most mornings body-boarding and then grab and go to get to work on time. If I have a good breakfast, it’s a real treat.
  2. What is your favorite past time, or hobby?
Body-boarding, although it’s more my life than just a hobby.
  3. What is your favorite book?
I love the Chalet Girls series by Lorraine Wilson. I’m a beach babe, but it’s such fun learning about women who live in the snow and ski. Skiing is similar to body-boarding in a strange way, if you know what I mean. Plus, the books are so romantic and fun to read.
  4. Who would you consider is your least favorite person, and why?
It should be my new boss, Carter Jones, as he keeps on shouting at me for nothing, but it isn’t. He’s too handsome and mysterious to hate.
  5. What is your biggest pet-peeve?
Perfectionism – harping on the smaller issues. And cruelty to animals.
  6. What is your dream vacation?
Mauritius or anywhere where the waves are good.
  7. Did you struggle to tell your author anything?
Yes, I struggled to mention my affair with my high school teacher. I felt really ashamed for falling for that jerk.
  8. What is your favorite part of your story?
When Carter tells me the truth.
  9. What inspired the title of your story?
My writer kept on thinking of shark bait. But Carter is a boss and he was a shark in the business world, plus, well, I can’t tell you anymore as it will give away the story.
  10. Do you think that there is a specific message to your story, that you’d like your readers to learn?
That love wins in the end. That meeting and loving the right person can set you free of some of your “curses.” That simply loving a person is one of the greatest gifts you can give to the world. That love surpasses duty.

Excerpts
#1
I grew nervous as the number of unfamiliar faces increased quickly. I tried to busy myself helping Diane clean up the mess we made in the kitchen, but she shooed me out and told me to go make friends. Unsure what to do, I headed toward the fire and took a seat away from everyone else. I started looking around for Mckayla when two unnaturally beautiful girls walked up to me and sat down on either side of me. The tall modelesque blonde smiled at me like she expected me to know who she was.

“Hi, you’re Aubrey! We’re so excited to finally meet you! Mckayla told us all about her amazing cousin and we’ve just been dying for you to get here! I’m Talia and this is Alexis, we’re Mckayla’s best friends. I’m so glad we are now an even number group. I was getting really tired of the threesome jokes.”

I smiled at her then turned toward the brunette that looked about my height and had an amazingly toned body that screamed she was a natural athlete. She was just as beautiful as Talia, but seemed much less intimidating. She smiled back and nodded toward a group of guys on the other side of the fire.

“I’m glad we found you before someone else got ahold of you. Mckayla is crazy busy being the super hostess, so we’re here to introduce you to people and keep you safe from any of those guys. She didn’t explain in detail, but Mckayla mentioned you’ve had guy trouble lately so she thought it would be best if we acted as buffers from them tonight.”

#2

“I don’t have a boyfriend. At least not anymore…We had an incident at my family’s Christmas party and I have sworn off men.”

“Now that’s not fair, new girl! Don’t let some dirt bag ruin all of our chances. A girl like you shouldn’t be allowed to swear off the rest of us.”

I didn’t have the nerve to ask him what he meant by ‘a girl like me’ so I ignored it. “You find me a good guy, Mike, someone honest and loyal and I will consider changing my mind.”

“Done. You and I are going out on Friday.”

I laughed despite his straight face. “Mighty sure of yourself. Are you positive you are the best choice as the representative for all men?”
“Trust me Aubrey, I’m a true gentleman. And this doesn’t have to mean anything. I just want to show you how a girl like you deserves to be treated. Any loser who has a chance with you and ruins it should be committed.”

#3

“Just ignore her, Aubrey. She’s a brat that’s used to getting her way. She’s just threatened by you.”

“She has no reason to be. I’m not trying to take her place.”

“You might not have meant to, but you kind of already did.”

I was confused and it must have shown on my face.

“You have been here for less than a week and you have a reputation of throwing parties everyone comes to, you got a spot in the dance class she wanted, and all the guys are fascinated by you. The best part is that you don’t even notice.”

“I just wanted to blend in. Getting attention was the farthest thing from my mind.”

He opened the door for me to my class. “There’s no way a girl like you could blend in. You stand out against these girls. You’re real, genuine, and you don’t try to be like the rest of them. You’re unique.”

#4

He grunted pushing up and landing on me with his full weight. He stared down at me with those deep brown eyes. My eyes moved down his face to his lips which were inches away from mine, just one move away from touching. I was frozen in the moment too shy to do anything but wait. I watched his eyes move from my eyes to my lips and sucked in a breath.

I laid there for a few moments confused. Was he going to kiss me? The opportunity had definitely presented itself! Slowly I sat up trying to follow him and act like nothing happened. “So should we give it a try?”

He shot a look at me clearly not understanding so I pointed to the boards.

“Surfing? Should I try to get up?”

He shook his head before standing up and reaching his hand out to help me up. I took it and met his eyes when we were next to each other again. He looked like he was about to say something, but turned and led the way to the boards.
